(Free!) Buttercup Bag Sewing Pattern

Inspired by...
: : warm weather today!
: : yellow week (which I TOTALLY missed...bummer)
: : Sew Mama Sew's Fat Quarter Month

This pattern uses a mere fat quarter of fabric for the outer + a little less of another fabric for lining. You'll also need a magnetic snap and (optionally) a couple of buttons, although it looks pretty cute without the buttons too. I think this would also look great with some piping or ric-rac over the pleats...I can't wait to see what y'all do with this one!

As usual, this pattern is for personal use only, and while I appreciate links to this post (but not directly to the pattern), please don't "borrow" my pictures without permission. Thanks and enjoy!

TERMS OF USE: This pattern is for personal use only UNLESS A LICENSE IS PURCHASED (see left sidebar). COMING SOON: Spring Top Week! For those who are new here, check out Summer Top Week. I was thinking it would be more fun if lots of people participated...maybe with prizes or something? You can make just one top or a top every day and we'll have a vote at the end of the week. A good chance to promote your blog. I'm thinking one of the first weeks of spring so you've got over a month to get sewing!

Oh! How did you KNOW I wanted to try my hand at making a bag?! And it's so ridiculously CUTE!

Hmm...no fat quarters in my stash, though. I'll have to squeak by with what I've got - my crafting is on a buying freeze until I work through some of this stash!!

Hi Rae, I found this pattern through the Sew Mama Sew flickr pool. I love it! I'm having a little bit of a problem printing out the pattern pieces on the pdf. For some reason they are printing out ginormous and won't fit on the page. Any suggestions?

Also, I love the fabric you used. I picked some of this up to make a skirt. Very Banana Republic, no?

Amy said...

If you select "Fit to Paper" when you go to print, it should work. I had the same trouble!

Rae said...

Printing Issues...

Yes, it seems the pattern pieces are ginormous unless you select "fit to page" on your page/printer setup. Other functions like "shrink to fit" or "best fit" might work as well.

The pattern will be the right size if the images print at exactly 8.5x11. Of course you could also try the big size and make a bigger bag (;

Sorry for the trouble, and thanks so much Stephanie and Amy for helping with this!

I finished my bag last night! I just love the pattern Rae, thank you.

I stumbled across your blog last night and HAD to make this bag! I just finished it, I love it! It was a little small, so I made it a little longer and put a zippered pocket inside instead of an open one. I used turquoise synthetic suede (from two bargain store placemats) and lined it with a fat quarter from my stash. It came out beautifully!! Thank you so much for sharing this pattern, I posted pictures on my blog (http://shastababy.wordpress.com) with a link to you. Again, many thanks!

Hello Rae. I made your bag and gave you due credit. Thanks, it was a lovely thing to do. I padded mine and sometimes use it in lieu of a camera case. Can anyone tell me what a fat quarter is? I think I had a thin half.

Hey From Angola. I just dicovered you through amelie from My daruma and I really enjoy the time spent through your lovely stuffs !!! I am planning to do a buttercup bag for a friend and I have one concern : I can't find any heavy weight interfacing (I'm in angola so a lot of stuffs are just impossible to get). So I was wondering if it would be very ugly if I don't put any ??? Thanks for yor answer,

This is such a cute pattern! I did have to purchase some cotton for the lining, but I was able to use scraps from a messenger bag my daughter just made to carry things to school. I added some free-motion embroidery to embellish my outside fabric and used scraps from my bag to make a coin purse to match. I put D-rings in to hook my strap to. Great pattern and very easy to put together. I am going to find something my younger daughter likes and let her have a go.
Thanks for sharing!!

Hey Rae-
I just tried my hand at making my first version of your buttercup bag. The pattern/instructions/pics were very well done and very helpful (as I am definitely a beginner!). I also made a maternity version of your 'ruffle top', though I opted to not add the ruffles in my case. Both the bag and the top were super fun to put together and I just wanted to say thanks for making such great, free tutorials availble! Makes learning to sew very enjoyable and less frustrating than I thought it would be! Thanks again!

Hi, Rae, just found your site the other day and fell in love with the buttercup design. I plan to buy the pattern, but before I do, I have a couple of questions 1) i don't have a website yet, but i will be selling my bags at a charity soon. How do I credit the design to you? And 2) i sew in my tags on the bag with my name, would I be required to make a little notation on the bottom i.e. designed by Rae Hoekstra? Just wanted to make sure before I start anything. Please let me know soon as possible. My event is on Nov. 13. Thank you, Rae!

I have had a full length chocolate brown wool overcoat (circa 1995) hanging in my house and have wanted to do something with it since I live in Phoenix and it is so 1990's. I think this bag is perfect for it! I hope it does well with a bit of a heftier fabric.

You've inspired me to make one of my own from a rosey tea towel, thanks for the idea! Here's the link: http://madebythesea.blogspot.com/2009/12/rosey-bag-for-r.html

Thank you so much for sharing this. I'm not working at the minute, so I'm having a frugal Christams and have made these bags for friends rather than buying them a gift. I'm sure they'll love them as much as I do. xxx

I was not able to download the diagrams correctly for the Buttercup purse. I have Microsoft Word 2008 and vista operating system and I am only getting the words and not the photographs. Can you help me?

Thanks so much for making this pattern available! I've had this post bookmarked for ages, and finally made it just yesterday. I linked to your blog from theatticstudio.blogspot.com. This is an adorable bag and a great pattern. Thanks again!

Hi! I love this bag and I made one a couple of weeks ago. I'm using it to teach my friends how to sew actually! I have a question though... are the seam allowances included in the pattern or are we supposed to add them? I figured they were included so cut them that way, but just thought i'd check :) Thanks!

Hey, thanks so much for this wonderful pattern. I too have had it saved as a "favourite" for ages and finally made it yesterday with some great brocade and suede....its easy and looks so great!!!
Excellent!! Im already thinking about my next bag!

Love this bag.
But I do have a comment about step #14. It says to turn lining inside out...which I did. But then could not see how I could place purse outer inside purse lining and have right sides be together. I think the first line (turn lining inside out) is an error. I had to go back to blog and view Word file photo's to see. You may want to remove that line so as not to confuse us newbies. :)

I had the same problem as Cindy (above) with step #14. The photo directions helped me figure it out, though, and my little bag turned out great! I've posted it (and linked here) on my blog. Heading over now to add mine to the flickr pool...

Thanks, Rae!

I love this pattern - made one for myself in a groove Amy Butler fabric, and another for a dear friend as a Christmas pressie, using brocade fabric and a real leather handle. It's so quick and versatile - genius!!! Jen x

A few girls got together and made this at my friend Sabra's house (Sew a Straight Line blog) on Saturday. It was so easy to follow and turned out SO cute. Thank you so much for offering an easy to follow tutorial. I'll definitely be making more. Have a wonderful day!!!

What a darling buttercup bag! I had so much fun making this that I used the scraps from the bag, lining and upper to make an accessory matching/coordinating zippy pouch as well as a purse size tissue cover and plan to give the set to my 83 year old mother for Mother's Day. I know she'll love it. I hope you'll stop by my blog to see my Buttercup Bag and accessories HERE
