Here’s another one of my creations, the adult-sized version of the Itty Bitty Baby Dress. The pattern was modified from this top from last summer (from a vintage pattern my mom gave me). This time I lengthened the top part with the idea that it would be an empire-waist top, and therefore be a bit more flattering than the original version. I also lengthened the ties and added pockets, a move which would have worked had I not accidentally cut the hemline too short. So now the pockets stick out under the hem when you have your hands in them…oops. Throw this one back on the pile!

The fabric is from Amy Butler’s Midwest Modern line. The background color is almost a candy pink, but in combination with the yellows and oranges it mellows out.

While I am happy with the overall look here, I am sorry to admit that this top is not working as a maternity top for a couple of reasons. First of all, I’m not sure if you can tell from the pictures but I am stuffed into it like a sausage. I must not have measured the width correctly because I can barely breath. This unfortunately is a thing that cannot be changed because silly me (!) I trimmed the side seams to under a 1/4″ after sewing them. The other issue is the length. While it may not look too short now, believe me, I’m going to need more length in a few weeks for sure.

I do like the pockets though. I’ll move them up and maybe a seester will have to borrow it until next year…

By the way, tomorrow’s top is NOT pink!!!

I like the style of this one too, especially the pocket..what a great addition. I honestly don’t think I have seen a top that has pockets like this. I definitely would love to try to make this one!

  4. Pajama Mama says:

cute! i totally understand it not fitting in a few weeks…maybe a really long tank will hide the underbelly!

  6. Myra says:

Really nice, keep it for post partum.

  7. LilyHaven says:

Gosh that’s super cute!!! I love the pockets. Such a cute touch. It will be great as a post-maternity top.

Another great top! Funny, I did look at the itty bitty top and saw an adult version of it!

Hi! Congratulations, first of all! Old Navy Maternity has long tanks that I lived in and am still wearing 4 months post partum. They are slightly curved (downward)at the hem to make them longer and avoid The Belly hanging out. Maybe you could also add a curved hem to the front to lengthen it as a maternity top? You did a great job on this. I love it.

It’s beautiful! The ties on the shoulders are really pretty – and you’re right, the pockets are great. I haven’t seen pockets in a top either – much more flattering than sticking them on the front. I love it.

    I really love that piping!

  12. Rosa says:

So cute. I love the little empire touch under the bust. Wear in good health.

  13. Rebekah says:

Love it. You are a very cute pregnant girl! Have you considered a spring “bottoms” week! Perhaps you could come up with a better name. I have so many tops because (like many women, I suspect) I am happier with my top half and that makes it easier. I could use some motivation to make some shorts and skirts.

  14. Shannon says:

I am so sorry its not going to work because it is totally adorable…especially with that little baby bump.

  15. c.Rachel says:

Pockets are great! You’re so good!

  16. em.s says:

finally…something cute that pregnant women can wear. I love it.

I love this top! I think you should make a tutorial with a pattern! I made the Itty Bitty Baby Dress and would love to have a "matching" top!
