I’m not sure I even know how many baby pants samples I’ve cranked out in the last couple weeks.  Spurred on by recent (and not-so-recent) comments asking for a pattern, I’ve been gettin’ busy.  And for those just joining, these pants are designed for cloth diaper babies, but they also work just fine for disposable-diapered babes.  So far I’ve made sizes for 6 months, 12 months, and 18 months, but I’m hoping to add 3 months and 2T by the end of the week.  For someone like me who has no training whatsoever in clothing design, grading, or computer graphics this has been a real exercise in patience.  Taking every pair of pants my kids ever wore and measuring rise, inseam, hip, waist, blah blah blah. Anyway, I’m hoping the time spent on all this will pay off with truly good-fitting baby pants.  Here’s a preview for your enjoyment.

super cute! i wish i would have found you when my kids were in diapers. i used cloth on all 3 of them – now 10, 6, and nearly 3. i always had such a hard time finding pants to fit over their 'big butts'!!!

Love it! And I can't wait. I avoid pants all together–it's either longies or shorties with a dress, or overalls–they're all that fit! Thanks for figuring it out for those of us who can't.

I applaud your tenacity. I actually made a few pants from fleece for my dear little cloth diapered toddler last winter. What you are describing was too much to do at the time. Hang in there. C looks adorable.

  16. Mandee Jo says:

I just want to say thank you so much for taking the time to do all that. Our first is due August 27th and since we intend to cloth diaper I am really looking forward to the pattern!

  17. Marybeth says:

I totally wish I had a baby right now just so I could make a pile of these pants!!!!

  18. ange_moore says:

I love those ruffly, vinatge-sheety pants! Great fabric and I love that they have a panel on the bottom – more likely to accommodate those cloth diaper bottoms!

  19. Nicole says:

Thank you for your efforts–it's hard to find pants that fit over cloth diapers!

  20. Safira says:

I'll admit it, I'm one of those who have been excited to see the results of your hard work! As a mom looking into cloth diapering, do you have a favorite brand?

  21. Kimberly says:

Oh I am SO excited! I am having such a hard time with pants that fit by cloth diaper-wearing baby! They seem to always fall down! These pants are just too ridiculously cute!

  22. Helen says:

    Wahoo!!! I can't wait either. I have a 2T and a 3m both in cloth diapers.

  23. The Cottage Mama says:

LOVE those pants! Toddler pants are so fun to make and so fast. I always try to enjoy my sewing process, but I love seeing finished results and pants are the best because they are so quick.

Love your addition of the "booty" panel…..super cute!!

  24. Rhiannon says:

  28. Max California says:

    Omg Rae YAY!

I was wondering if you'd ever do it, or just continue to lead us on :P

I can't wait! You are amazing

  29. Gorby family blog says:

I am so excited for this pattern! I can only imagine how much work is involved! I've had trouble fitting pants on my cloth diapered babies for years and I can tell you that this pattern will be GREATLY appreciated my many! Thanks for your perseverance.

  30. Three Lads and a Lis says:

seriously canNOT wait!!! The linen band ones are my faves… I know it will be worth the wait :)

  31. Deborah Raymond says:

This is so funny. My children all have NO butts and when they were in cloth diapers that just helped them fit into their "regular" pants a little better. I am usually trying to slim down the pants instead of expanding them. I forget that there are problems on both sides of the fence. The first two pair of pants are my favorite.

  32. Anonymous says:

I too am looking forward to the pattern. I can't wait to make them!!!!! Please be soon, my boy is nearly 2.

  33. OneGirlCircus says:

OH I love them SO MUCH!

  37. Sew Much Ado says:

Wow, I hear ya about the whole pattern process, my first one was a BIG learning experience, but the good thing is once you learn what to do, you'll always know :) . And those pants are adorable, so I'm sure the work will all be worth it!

I was thinking of you last night when I finally finished my "Spring Top Week" shirt! …I guess I can save it for next year!

  38. Knit and Purl Mama says:

I've been meaning to make shorts for my little guys. Will it be a free tutorial? Thanks!

  39. Lynn says:

Thank you for all your efforts! really looking forward to this pattern-even if I have to pay for it!

  40. e.c says:

Wow, you are amazing!!! I'm serious. And the big bum cloth diaper baby look is super cute…I think I may try to whip some up in my no spare time while you're working on it too. :)

  41. Stephanie says:

I am so excited! I started cloth diapering my 2 year old when he was one and it has been a huge problem finding pants that fit. And now that we are in cloth pull-ups, things haven't got any better :o ) Thank you for all the work you've done and look forward to the pattern!

  42. shanda says:

Oh sweet! I'm excited for you that you are making the pattern. There seems to be a ton of interest. As one of your non-sewing friends, I greatly admire your talents. Very cute pants. Very cute children. And, as I recall, very cute Rae.

Love you deary! Love your sense of style.

  43. Leslie says:

I cannot wait!!! My 4 month old is now wearing size 18 month pants because that's the size it takes to fit over her cloth diaper. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE this pattern ASAP, but I understand about things taking time. I appreciate your efforts. Oh how I'm hoping this will be a free pattern…. pretty please?

  44. Erica says:

These are so cute! I will have to make some of these for my three month old when she gets a little older. She is growing so fast right now that I know she would outgrow them before I finished sewing them:)

  45. Tricia says:

Oh I'm getting excited. I just spent all day working on a pair of baby pants…because I couldn't find a pattern I liked. I sure hope that the one's I made fit, but I am completely confident in your construction abilities. Thanks for putting in the effort.

  46. Sarah says:

I have been waiting a long time for this pattern, and I'm really looking forward to it. I've been collecting remnant fabric for tiny baby pants. The little guy in my belly due in about 6 weeks! It is so hot and humid in FL right now, he probably won't wear many pants until it starts to cool off – around November or so… By then, I hope to have pants rather than fabric stashed. :)

  47. Angie says:

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I am sending you kisses and hugs because I am so freakin' excited! I can't wait! My little boy is about to be cloth diapered and ALL his pants and outfits are too small/too long/won't fit correctly and it's driving me insane. Thank you! :)

  48. Dallas says:

Cute! I would love a pattern for some little pants for cloth-diapered babies. I'm in the sewing groove of my pregnancy right now and looking for things to make.

  49. Jac says:

    Cute cute cute!
And thank you for putting in the hard work for those of us who just have no idea! :)

  50. Crafty Auntie Creates says:

What awesome pants! Baby pants are hands down my favorite thing to make.

  51. Kathleen P says:

Oh my gosh thanks. Your pattern looks way better than the cloth diaper baby pants pattern I made a year ago and have been using with t-shirts. I copied lands end–they make pants with reasonable sizing. I think you're right: you might soon have a riot on your hands out here in cloth diapering internet land, but its most likely a very politely opinionated riot.

  52. shelly says:

I'm so, so excited about this pattern! We have a cloth diapered 15-month-old who really needs some new pants. I am just itching to get my hands on your pattern. Thanks so much for your fabulous work and tutorials!

  53. Andrea @ TheTrainToCrazy.com says:

LOVE them!! Can't wait for the pattern.

  54. Twigs @ Twiggles and Trunks says:

wahoo! i'm expecting our 3rd baby late December. i've been looking for a pattern to make fleece footies to fit over a cloth booty.

  55. Jonathan, Rachel, Greta says:

I CANNOT wait for this pattern!! My babies are CD as well (due in 1 week!) and finding pants that cover their big ol booties is nearly impossible! Will your pattern work with knits as well? Can't wait!! Thanks so much for doing this. :)

  56. Darci says:

you might try finding a book/chart with industry standard grading for childrens clothing. I think that would help you generate other sizes once you have you sample size perfected.

  57. Mama Hoot Designs says:

I'd just like to request a license option. I've been revamping some of my own patterns to fit my daughter's cloth diapered behind and recently had a request to sell the clothes in my Etsy shop. So, if you feel like it, I'd be interested!

  58. Cindy Cooksey says:

Those pants are really cute! Since my daughter is using cloth diapers on her daughter, I think your big butt designs are wonderful.

  59. slw71881 says:

Hooray!! I've been trying to figure out how to make my own, but am having a very hard time getting the butt size to work. Can't wait for an actual pattern!!

  60. Dulcimer says:

They look great! Can't wait for the pattern!

  61. melissa says:

rae, THANK YOU!!! from the bottom of my heart and my son's HUGE cloth diapered butt, THANK YOU!! i just purchased this pattern and will be cutting the fabric this afternoon. i've been dreading making pants and having to alter the patterns. i tried this when my daughter was in cloth and it was a lot of trial and, mostly, error. i have been in search of a pattern like for big baby butts for a couple years now! you have made my weekend, mama :)
