Crafters + Snacks = Awesome.
We had the most fantastic time last night at our first ever SE Michigan Crafters Meetup. I was overwhelmed by the response with only a week’s notice — over 25 people showed up and I don’t know that we could have handled many more as our room was chock full of energetic crafters.
The space was amazing. A number of people commented on how great the room (which normally functions as the church’s youth room) was for what we were doing. There were comfy couches for knitting and handworking and plenty of tables for sewing.
a pool table and ping-pong table for cutting and a bar area (can I even call it that if it’s in the youth room? hee.) for snacks:
It was a good thing I didn’t really plan on getting anything done (my cohost Karen called me “The Bride”) because I spent the whole time orbiting the room with a plate of food in one hand and a coffee in the other. I did make a point of sewing one cloth napkin in the last half hour so that if Mr Rae asked me what I made I could say “SEE?”
Everyone brought their own projects which made it super easy to plan. It was so fun just to walk around and talk to everyone: I got to pick Caroline’s brain on how best to deal with the quilting issues that have popped up with my Far Far Away linen quilt (turns out she is an experienced quilter), talk blogging shop with Melynda, Kristy, and Jill, rant about the Sewing Revolution with Emily and Lisa, talk Weekend Sewing with Shari (who had gone to the week before mine in Vermont this past summer) and quiz everyone else about what they were working on. So much fun to see everything from quilts to baby booties to felt play tents being constructed in one room.
Special thanks to Trinity Church of Livonia for letting us use this amazing space. We will be back! And another special thank you to Karen for helping me plan, get the word out, and bringing the Starbucks. Right now I’m looking at my calendar and thinking Friday December 10th for the next one, but we’ll see how December shapes up. I’ll be sure to post about it when I know for sure so you can RSVP if you’re thinking of joining us!

That looks like so much fun. I wish every town had one. Or that I even knew enough people to start my own. Have fun!
Rae,
Thank you for organizing this event. It was so much fun! Looking forward to the next one.

Looks like FUN was had by ALL! Are those dinosaur plates on the refreshment island (trying not to call it a "bar")? I love the dinosaur plates. Exactly the sort of thing that I'd have if I had thrown together a crafting evening.
cathy: YES those ARE dinosaur plates, courtesy of Karen who had a pile left over from her daughter Ella's birthday party!!!
Looks like you guys had a blast! Looking forward to trying to make it up to one someday…on a SATURDAY.
Love this! And agree with the first comment, I wish we could set one up in every town! LIke here in Virginia Beach for example
Thanks again Rae for planning everything, we had lots of fun! It's so refreshing to just have people in the same room with me while sewing! On a side note, whoever made the Snickerdoodle cookies is my hero, they were delicious! If their baker wants to send a recipe along that would be ever better.
Nice to meet a few of you, and hopefully I'll get to meet a few more in the future.
I just read about this last night, and am SO in for the next one!
I was so bummed to miss it. I didn't hear about it until Wednesday and couldn't make it to livonia Thursday night. December 10 might work for me though. I will check in often to keep up on the date. It looks like it was tons of fun!
I'm so jealous that I don't live near you! These look like scrapbooking nights my church used to have. Though I'm pretty sure you'd kick me out because I always have to spread out across one full table for even the simplest sewing projects!
What a wonderful large gathering.
Thank you so so much Rae, I had such a wonderful time – and I actually managed to get 2 projects done! I'll be blogging about it later this weekend…
And Liz, I made the Snickerdoodles – so thank you! And nothing special, just the recipe out of the Betty Crocker Cookbook with an added 1.5tsp of vanilla.
Can't wait until next time!
Also, Dec. 10th works for me!
Aww, Rae I wanna live by you!!! I wish I could have been there! Maybe I need to start on up near where I live….hmmm.
i love that when you said you were serious about snacks, you really meant it!
great photos, thanks for sharing so that i can live vicariously through you guys!
Oh I wish I could have been there! I live way too far away (though I used to live not too far from you). It looks like it was a really good time!
Oh, so jealous! Looks like a blast!
Sooo…what kind of tips did you get for the far far away quilt?? Inquiring minds…or mind…would like to know, as I will be making two similar quilts at the turn of the year:)
This SURELY is what Heaven must be like! What a fun way to get you craft on!!!
Okay…how did I miss this when I live right in Livonia. I have been out of the loop lately working. I will definitely watch for the next one.
Thanks Rae! I got so much more done (unlike you) there than at home. I was so busy working that I didn't even dig into the snacks
Can't wait for the next one !
I wish we could hold one in SW Michigan! I'm in GR and would love to attend/help organize. How inspiring it would be to be surrounded by so many crafty folks!!
I am soooo jealous !!! Wish we could have that kind of events over here !!!
What a wonderful community of creativity!
I can't wait for the next one. Best craft night EVAR.
For the first time ever I actually had a split-second thought like, "Man, I wished I lived in Michigan!" Then I remember how much warmer Florida is and my thought changes to, "Man, I wish ya'll would come and meet in the Florida panhandle near me. I would totally clear my schedule to be there." How. Fun. Totally inspired to plan something similar.
I had so much fun! It was really great meeting you. I do hope to make it down for another one. Thank you for the inspirational night!
P.S. What was that pattern number again?
MICHIGAN…really? This just made my day! I'm pretty close and would love to make the next meeting that looked like so much fun!
Thanks for putting this together! I'm so glad I got to join Melynda and Jill for a crafty night away from the kiddos!
Thanks Rae for getting us all together! I had so much fun!
Thanks for hosting such a fabulous night! I had a great time meeting you and crafting with company!
Oooo! All those lucky ladies! Again I say, STOCKHOLM NEXT!
I wish I lived in Michigan. Looks like fun!
I would LOVE to participate in the next one!
Thanks so much for planning everything, Courtney and I had a great time. It was wonderful meeting everyone. Looking forward to December!
