Studio Weekend recap

Here’s some pics of the Made By Rae Sewing Studio Retreat I hosted at my studio last weekend so you can get a little peek into the weekend!!!

We hauled out the serger for a lesson on sewing with a serger (Shannon is shown trying it out, above), as well as lessons on shirring, dart sewing, tracing a well-loved garment to make a new pattern, using a blind hem foot, bust adjustments, and linings — it was a FULL weekend!

And as you can see, there was lots and lots of sewing, all weekend long.

Here’s Karen, giving her lesson on sewing linings:

And Chris and Victoria cutting out their Washi Dresses:

Didn’t they turn out great??

Shannon also used the Anna Maria Horner Field Study coordinates print for a Washi (her’s was quilting cotton, not voile), but added a pointed collar and sleeve ala the Washi Expansion Pack:

Here’s Jaime modeling her Washi Dress!!

Caroline and Amanda helped me test out the Josephine sewing pattern:

And Sonia made a lovely Ruby top!

Of course I couldn’t let anyone go home without a schwag bag!!

Special thanks to Robert Kaufman for donating a yard of their oh-so-lovely Union Chambray and a sample pack of fabrics, Monaluna for donating fat quarters and a “On the Go” Dress sewing pattern, Cloud9 Fabrics for donating fat quarters, pens, and a cute little drawstring bag, C&T publishing for donating Aneela’s Pop-Out Box book, Sarah Jane for sending over some adorable 2014 calendars, and Green Bee Patterns for those cute little rulers!!! And of course I threw in a little pack of Fanfare flannels as well.

It was so much fun to hang out with all of these ladies (Sonia and Shari are shown with me + baby bump below), they were all a total blast!! I hope to see each and every one of you again soon!!!

PS If you missed out this time but want to join us next time, April Rhodes has agreed to come and teach a weekend studio workshop with me here in Ann Arbor in February!!! This one will also have a garment sewing focus, and she has new patterns coming out soon so it should be very fun! This will probably be the last weekend event I offer for quite a while, so I wanted to try and squeeze one more in before the baby comes this spring. Stay tuned!

  1. Can I ask you about that big color chart behind (who I assume is) Karen? What is it? Where did you get it? I can’t stop looking at it!

  2. Wow! I really wish WA wasn’t so far away. Are you coming to Dry Goods in Seattle anytime again soon? πŸ™‚

  3. Hi,
Your retreat looks like it was great fun. I am curious to know of all your guests that came to the retreat, what was the furthest city or state traveled from?

    • I came from Colorado (3 hrs by plane). I think that might have been the furthest. Most were scattered across the Midwest with an east coaster in the bunch – I realize now that I didn’t know where one gal was from.

I didn’t realize until this trip that Ann Arbor is in the Eastern Timezone. I just assumed it was Central. I live on Mountain Time. So, that was a bit weird.

  4. Looks and sounds amazing! I will definitely be watching for the February dates. (and i recognize Victoria from our NYC Weekend Sewing workshop!)

  5. That looks so fun! I live up in Traverse City so it wouldn’t be too long of a drive for me to come to one of those. I haven’t sewn in forever, and have a serger just sitting around that I’m a little too nervous to tackle on my own. I may seriously consider it for February!

  6. Oooooo….I would love to come in February, I’ll have to run it by the hubs, not sure if he would buy off on it considering how much money I spend on sewing as is, hehe. But I do fly for free, so it wouldn’t be so bad, right?? Looks like a fun weekend!!

    • Not sure Carlee but I can put you on the email list to be notified when we do know!! We love Canucks!! πŸ™‚

  7. this looks like so much fun (and full of so many useful lessons)! and your space can definitely accommodate all those seamstresses and their gear! i can’t believe you and april are co-teaching in february…the wheels are already turning on how i might somehow finagle yet another trip back home this year…

  8. Wow Rae that’s great in your new store!! I’m so happy for you! Your new store, your new fabric, and your extra family member πŸ™‚
