Striped Wiksten Tank
Hi everyone! I had such a fantastic weekend. Mr Rae’s parents had the kids for four days so Mr Rae and I got to have a nice relaxing “stay-cation” at home by ourselves. The house always feels so quiet when the kids are gone. It’s weird. And of course I miss them and we Skype or talk on the phone every day if we can. But I always know they are having so much fun at grandma’s (she has a pool — need I say more?) which allows me to relax and do all kinds of things I want to do, like sew, sew, sew! So this weekend I finished dress for Clementine (I know, yet another one…snooze) AND a short-sleeved Negroni…
UPDATED! The ever-popular Baby Sunsuit Tutorial
** I couldn’t let yet ANOTHER summer go by without updating this oldie-but-goodie tutorial! I hope you’ll enjoy this sunsuit tutorial, new and improved! **
This is an update to the original Baby Sunsuit Tutorial, which was posted over two years ago (has it really been that long…YIKES!) as part of the Baby Bonanza series over on luvinthemommyhood. This sunsuit is completely adorable and makes a great gift for a baby. Clementine used to love hers as you can plainly see:

(I can’t resist showing this photograph over and over. It’s a classic. It’s fine with me if you pin it, but please don’t use it anywhere else without permission. Once…
Polka Dot Dress
She had outgrown the other polka dot top but was still insisting on wearing it despite the fact that it was leaving marks in her armpits from being too tight. She would demand it even when it was in the wash, and as soon as it came out clean it would be the first thing to be worn again. Something had to be done. So I made another, bigger one. In the exact same fabric, because she’s been a little fussy about what she’ll put on lately. Sure enough, it’s a favorite.
It made the perfect summer dress for a playdate with friends a few weeks ago.
Here’s what…
Voile Dress with Mini-Poms and some pattern updates
{please don’t pin this image of Clementine (above). Thanks!}
Lately the major sewing theme for me has been DRESSES. For both me and the girl. Does anyone remember the polka dot top I made for Clementine last year for Once Upon A Thread? The Ric Rac Baby Dress from waaay back when (oh my goodness Clementine is SO SMALL in those pictures!)? Or this vintage sheet version?
All of these were variations on a basic cropped bodice pattern that I drew up that is dangerously addictive and versatile (I’ve now gotten pattern pieces digitized for sizes 0-3mo to 5T, woot!). This newest deep pink voile version is the size 3 and was made with…
Washi Dress
UPDATE: The Washi Dress sewing pattern is now available here.
Last week I made this dress out of a few yards of Washi I had previously designated for a skirt. When this dress design popped into in my head, I got more and more excited about it, and felt strongly that it needed to be made with the washi tape print. After it was finished I was even more excited. I loves it muchly.
Fabric: Washi Tape by Rashida Coleman-Hale for Timeless Treasures (find it here or here). It was so much fun to be able to show this dress off to Rashida herself this past weekend (and she loved it too)!
POCKETS!…
Bubblegum Dress
I’m sharing this pink dress I made for Clementine over at skirt as top today as part of the Vintage May series Kristin is hosting along with Jess of CINO. Click over to skirt as top to see more pictures and a peek at the vintage pattern I used to make it!
Those of you who are fans of the pink rainboots will be happy to see they’ve made an appearance again. I am going to cry big fat turtle tears on the day I discover she is too big to squeeze her feet in these anymore.
Liberty Tie Top
Another spring top today! Made with Liberty cotton lawn purchased at Purl and the same pattern as the Hello Pilgrim dress.
This one was completed just before leaving for New York a few weeks ago so I wore it over to Purl to buy some more Liberty as a reward. Not sure why I felt that making one top meant that I should buy enough fabric for *two* more tops, but I did. I get irrational around Liberty*, what can I say?
I shortened the dress pattern and left off the pockets and sleeve caps, using some bias tape to finish the armholes instead. The tie is longer and I like it…
The dwarfs make another appearance
Edited: This post was originally entitled “Snow White makes another appearance,” in reference to the fabric used, but as Snow White doesn’t actually appear anywhere in this post, I changed the name.
This morning I decided it was time to take on another challenge. I made this Charlie Tunic with the leftover fabric from my Snow White top ages ago and she’s been refusing to wear it for weeks. There was chocolate involved. And as you can see I emerged victorious.
We are both wearing our tops today!!!
She occasionally, briefly, wears things I’ve sewn
Do you ever accidentally put two fabrics together and it totally works? One day I set these two fabrics down in the same stack and it was meant to be. The grounds for both fabrics happen to match perfectly and so do the purples. I love how these look together. I’m not sure what I did right to get her to put the dress ON — there’s currently a backlog of about six other garments I’ve recently finished for her that she absolutely won’t wear (even when full-scale mini-marshmallow bribery is being attempted) — but she did and that’s what’s important. It was kind of her to indulge me on this one. Even if I had to chase her around with the camera…
Striped Knit Top (for me!)
Alright, here’s another spring top by moi…made with the same striped knit as Elliot’s tee (posted last week, see that link for fabric source), and yes, he asks me to wear it every time he wears his so we can match. And do I? OH YES I DO. Do not think me so short-sighted as to believe that this will last forever. The things you do that you said you’d never do…*sigh*
I think it looks good with this red skirt and my bright pink skinnies. Woot!
The pattern came from a trace of a stretch tee that fits well. I plan to teach a class on how to do…
