Since she ever so generously just snatched up a deal on a serger for me (yipee!) from an acquaintance that was selling hers, I jumped right on this gift for her.

She wanted her's more "Hippie" or "Flower Child." I think I nailed it. Mom was very pleased. The prints are quilting cottons and the brown is a twill from the clearance remnant bin. All are from Joann's.
I was struggling with the trim, as I wanted to use both the rust colored piping and the pom-poms (so 60's I thought) but it was lacking something. My brilliant and ever patient husband suggested the green bias tape to be added behind(!) the poms, which just made it perfect I think. He said it made the poms look like little trees, awesome!
I added the recessed zipper for security, and I had a lot of fun with the interior. a zipper interior pocket (new for me!) on one side, and the other side I did a patch pocket with a pen slot. I also added a key ring clip as per my mother's request. The zipper pulls are some beads I found in the clearance pile bin at Joann's. I thought they went quite well.
I inserted a piece of super-thick interfacing cut to shape between the flowery round center panel and the canvas I backed it with for some serious structure. No droopy center panels this time!")

The flower print is a home decorator fabric from Joann's, and the pink dotted outer is a lovely soft and thick home decorator fabric from a local store called Triad, where the back room has all the sweet deals . . .
There's actually two pipings inserted around the center panel, one thicker blue and tiny yellow one. Why choose when you can do both, right? Piping is a favorite trim of mine, just barely edging out contrasting bias tape. I'm not sure about the lining I chose. The plain yellow is kinda boring, I think.
I laugh though, because the finished purse makes me think of the Julie Andrews movie, The Sound of Music. Remember the scene just before Maria returns and the Captain, Baroness, and Max are sitting around a table having a drink of pink lemonade?
Baroness: "Pink lemonade! Not too sweet, not too sour."
Max: "Just too....pink."
Anyway, would you believe I drove to three different stores (with four children under age five and under) to try and find the rings? Yup, turns out my local Joann's had them. But not with the sewing notions. Nor near the sewing supplies at all. Nope, back in the opposite corner, past the picture frames and hidden behind the fluffy white wedding aisle is a large section of purse clasps and handles. Because when you are making a purse, you also need a fake floral bridal bouquet, a tube of puffy paint, and an order of custom framing. Right. Next time I'll just ask before leaving the store the first time.")

![Fail!](http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2136/5708593463_59d8e66cd6_s.jpg "Motivated by the <a href=\"http://www.made-by-rae.com/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Made by Rae</a> <a href=\"http://www.made-by-rae.com/2011/04/its-time-for-spring-top-sewalong.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">Spring Top Sewalong</a>, I decided to sew a top using the <a href=\"http://www.lilblueboo.bigcartel.com/product/diy-pdf-pattern-and-tutorial-the-pieced-tunic-dress-sizes-xs-to-xl\" rel=\"nofollow\">Lil Blue Boo Pieced Tunic pattern</a>. I chose this pattern for so many reasons:
1. It's cute. The style defintely fits into my wardrobe of casual comfort. I really wanted to make something casual but a little funky...beach/island wear.
2. It seemed pretty simple to sew & I 've been wanting to sew up this top!
3. I have this obsession with upcycling fabric/clothes. I have a crazy collection of second hand clothes just waiting to be refashioned or made into other things. The <a href=\"http://www.lilblueboo.bigcartel.com/product/diy-pdf-pattern-and-tutorial-the-pieced-tunic-dress-sizes-xs-to-xl\" rel=\"nofollow\">LBB Pieced Tunic pattern</a> is made for this! :) I really needed to make a dent in that stash of clothes and start sewing things. Plus, I think it's so fun to mix, match, and put together one-of-a-kind items. This pattern can yield such different looks just by the fabric and combos you choose.
4. It gave me a reason to bust out that serger of mine!
So yeah..."ta da!" here's the top I whipped up. Yay! Not too bad for my first try at this pattern. So, what was my "FAIL?" I missed the deadline for the Spring Top Sew Along by about 1 1/2 hours (I just had too much going on yesterday)...or so I thought. I threw in the towel and was comforted by the fact I had a new top for my wardrobe, started sewing on my serger, and made a sliver of a dent in my second hand clothes stash. Then, today, I read that the contest had been extended for 24 hours!!! How in the world did I miss that post? But alas, I was reading about the extension 2 hours past the extension deadline. Fail! Well, since I'm not entering this top in the contest, at least I don't have to photo myself in it! ha ha ha! Another plus!
Anyways...I'm so happy to that I was able to make this LBB Pieced Tunic. I'm so glad that Ashley over at <a href=\"http://www.lilblueboo.com/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Lil Blue Boo</a> came out with this pattern for adults! :) As with all other <a href=\"http://www.lilblueboo.bigcartel.com/category/pdf-sewing-patterns\" rel=\"nofollow\">LBB Patterns</a>, the Pieced Tunic pattern includes easy to follow directions & photos, great tips for sewing with knits, and a section on ways to piece the top together. The top is very easy to assemble even for a novice like me. The part that takes the longest (but is so much fun to me) is choosing what t-shirts/fabric I want to use and figuring out how I want it piece it together. The sewing itself is quick. For this particular top I used 4 different shirts and some scraps from the <a href=\"http://www.flickr.com/photos/43441357@N06/5478558936/in/photostream\">green Little Woo</a> I sewed. Pattern seems to fit true to size...what was I thinking making an XS?! ha ha ha! Next time around I will make it in a small and shorten it a tad bit. I'll be making a few more of these tops for myself! :)")
