The Princess and the Pea Dress

First can I just say, the Gulf of Mexico at sunset is quite possibly the best backdrop for photos that I have ever had. These pics are all unedited (save a couple of crops), taken with a cheap 50 mm lens, no tricks, so fun. Snapping pictures of my daughter playing happily on the beach in something cute I made her in less than a half hour THAT SHE WILL WEAR WITHOUT A TANTRUM = heavenly.

Second. I have owned this Heather Ross Far Far Away Double gauze for more than three years, but it wasn’t until I chopped a bunch of it up for a rainbow quilt that I felt really liberated to really dig into it. A quilt for Clementine was always the first thing I meant to do with it, but now there are plenty of other big chunks of the rest of the collection that I can see already will make divine little outfits for the girl. Fun!

Third. This Florida vacation has not been quite as idyllic as it looks in these pictures and in my Instagram pics. Mr Rae, his parents, Elliot, and I all spent the earlier half of this week suffering from a ridiculously contagious stomach flu that now everyone on this trip except Clementine has had (we’re in Florida this week on an annual vacation with Mr Rae’s entire family. We’ve done this now for four years in a row instead of exchanging gifts for Christmas). My sister-in-law now has something resembling strep. Ack. I don’t think I want to do this again. All that to say, family vacations can be a mixed bag, right?

  1. Rae, we’ve had the same thing, only mixed in with the chest cold that my nephew gave everyone when he came to visit a couple weeks back. Ain’t it fun?

  2. That dress is beautiful! YAY that she likes to wear it! Boo that you have all been sick 🙁 Something like that has happened to us every year we have gone on vacation since having kids!! Boo Boo Boo! I hope you all get a moment to eek out a bit of fun and sick free relaxation before you leave!

  3. yikes. sorry you’ve all been so ill. stomach flus are really the worst. speaking of bad times for everyone to get the flu…the last two times everyone in our family has gotten ill to their tummies were 1 week after our oldest daughter was born, and then about 1 week after our youngest was born. so not fun.
on a lighter note. I LOVE that you’ve been digging into all your Heather Ross lately. And I love what you’ve been making with it. keep it up, sister.
and try to feel better and enjoy the rest of your trip!

  4. oh. my. gosh. these pics are beautiful! she looks so pretty in her dress. 🙂 someday I’ll have to find out what town you’re visiting and have myself a little trip there. Sorry you guys got sick, bummer, but I love the idea of going on a family vacation instead of exchanging presents!

  5. Love the dress and I’m so jealous of the sundress weather and white sand! My son and their cousins got Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease right before we went to Hawaii this summer, but it miraculously cleared. So sorry you guys have been sick ON the trip, though. That’s the WORST. Bright side: you probably look totally amazing in your swimsuit after puking your guts out like a crazy fad diet, right? 😉

  6. This is my favorite fabric ever. It is perfect turned in to the little sundress and the most perfect backdrop!! Beautiful photos!!

  7. Wow, that totally bites. And strep too? I’m really sorry! But, yeah, great photos! And, to answer your comment, why yes, it IS impossible for me to be a great aunt. Had a little mishap with a time-turner and a hole in the space-time continuum, but it’s all worked out now.

  8. gorgeous dress! sorry you’ve been sick!
we took our first family holiday in August and spent the four days in our hotel room with gastro! worst ever! my daughter ‘never ever wants to go on holidays again’!!

  9. We live in FL, and the only pictures that I ever like of my kids come from the beach. You are right – the lighting is always just great. Sorry you’ve had a rough go with illness while on vacation. I hope you can pull some quality time out of the rest of your trip!

  10. Baby C looks gorgeous in the dress…its so mice to see kids enjoying the clothes we make for them. Makes all the work so worth it.

  11. The FL gulf is beautiful, the pictures of your daughter in her little dress are just beautiful. Hope you all recover soon. My husband and I always joke that we need a vacation just to recover from vacation.

  12. So sorry you were sick on vaca! Ugh! That wretched bug is running rampant in the UK too. All four of us have had it, my husband and I lucky enough to have it twice. I’m ready to burn down our house just to kill it! Hope everyone is better now!

  13. Greetings from Carolina! I’m bored to death at work so I decided to browse your blog on my iphone during lunch break. I really like the information you provide here and can’t wait to take a look when I get home. I’m shocked at how fast your blog loaded on my phone .. I’m not even using WIFI, just 3G .. Anyhow, amazing site!
