Observer Isla Dress

Last week I posted this photo on Instagram to show off the new Ellesquare pincushion that Karen gave me for my birthday, and I got so many comments asking for more details on the dress. Here’s a much better look!

Observer Isla Dress

In my last post, I shared a woven maxi dress made with fabric from the Observer fabric collection by my friend April Rhodes. Observer also has a few prints on jersey knit, and this dress was made with one of these. It’s incredibly comfortable and perfect for every day. The Art Gallery jersey knits have a lovely amount of stretch!

This dress pattern is called Isla, and it will be my next sewing pattern to launch. I’ve been sewing versions of this pattern for years, yes, literally years, so I’m really excited to be able to finally make it available. As you can see it has a simple bodice with a gathered skirt that attaches at the natural waist. Isla can also be made as a top instead of a dress.

Update: the Isla Dress & Top Pattern is now available! buy now

  1. Such a cute dress design! And you really picked the perfect fabric for it. Love the color, the drape, the pattern… all of it!

    • LOL teacher test!!

p.s. I finally sewed up a Gemma tank and I LOVE IT. I want to make a bazillion more. Too bad it’s finally cooling off here. I always get inspired to make things at the wrong end of the season.

  2. Would this be good for a somewhat beginner? I absolutely love it and have been looking for similar dresses in stores but I can never find them! Now I can make my own!!!

    • Hi Emily,

I think this pattern would be great for a somewhat beginner! It’s not a difficult project if you’re willing to try something new (for instance: sewing with knits)!

      • No, unfortunately we won’t have sleeves on this one!! Isla will be a Presto pattern, so it won’t be as complex as the patterns such as Beatrix from the main collection that include sleeves (on the plus side: it will cost less!)

I think you’ll still find that this works great under sweaters as a layering piece for fall and spring!!

  3. This dress is fabulous. I always like your fabric choices! Can you tell us again what source you get great waistband elastic by the yard?

  4. I love this! I have never worked with knits before, but I might just have to try it for this. I’ve just been looking at dresses online and it would be so much cooler to make my own. It does look achievable! 🙂

  5. In your Fall pattern preview you are modeling this top in an Indian-ish knit fabric. Please can you share what fabric that is? The top looks really smashing in that fabric (and others from your archives as well). If that Indian-y print is still available, can you point us to it? Inquiring minds want to know.

  6. I love the teacher test! I have to wear big scarves with most of my off the rack dresses to avoid that. Bought the pre-sale and am not-so-patiently waiting for the release!
