Black & White Mosaic Shawl

Behold my latest finished knitted object: a mosaic shawl! This pattern was designed by Gudrun Johnston who I had the good luck to actually bump into in person once at Churchmouse (RIP) on Bainbridge Island whilst on a little family trip. I had the pattern in the Black & White no. 6 issue of Making Magazine which is no longer in print, but the pattern is also available on Ravelry.

I used Kelbourne Woolen Camper for the cream color, and Biches et Buches le petit Lambswool in very dark grey that I picked up at Tolt when we were in Washington at the end of March. I’m quite taken with the mosaic knitting technique, as it’s less fussy than colorwork, but has such a cool design effect.

I think this is a great project for someone who has never tried mosaic knitting, because it really is quite simple in terms of techniques: garter tab cast on (which I always have to YouTube how to do), knitting F/B to increase, and slipping stitches to get that mosaic pattern. Highly recommend!!

As you can see it looks pretty awesome with my Jade/Isla Grid dress-turned-tunic (previously blogged here).
